A carousel, merry go round or carousel is an amusement ride consisting of a rotating platform with seats for passengers. Traditionally the "seats" are forms of wooden horses or other animals, which in many cases they are mechanically moved up and down to simulate a horse galloping. Normally, the music is repeated while the carousel turns.

Although modern roundabouts are mainly made up of horses, carousels previous periods often included several varieties of animals, such as dogs, horses, rabbits, pigs and deer, to name a few.

Any rotating platform can also be called carousel. In a leisure park, a carousel is usually simple, the rotary platform is driven by children with bars or handles with which children can cling while running. In an airport conveyor belts in the baggage area are often called carousels.

In EE. UU., Mexico and Argentina, the carousel or carrousel going counterclockwise. In many European countries (UK, the Netherlands, etc), carousels in the opposite direction (clockwise). The reasons for this are the subject of speculation.

The first carousel or merry-go that has the information is displayed on a bas-relief of the Byzantine Empire dated around the year 500 AD, showing a group of people in baskets suspended from a central pole. The word carousel has its origins in the Spanish and Italian garosello carosella ( "little battle"), used by the crusaders to describe a combat training exercise and a common game between the Turkish and Arab riders towards the 1100. In a sense this device can be considered a mechanism for cavalry training; reinforced riders preparing for battle when attacking with wood swords dolls representing the enemy.

The Crusaders discovered this method and brought the idea to their lords and kings in Europe. There the carousel was kept secret within the castle, being used for the training of riders; carousels were not shown to the general public.

For Turkish and Arabic cavalry near a carousel 1680 as training apparatus constructed by the provider rings, wooden horse was suspended beams supported by a central column. The riders aimed with lances, trying to thread rings located around the carousel, moved by men, horses or mules.
