The Avengers (in
English, The Avengers and the invincibility of the twentieth century in ancient
Latin translations made by Editorial La Prensa) are a group of superheroes
consisting of characters from the US publisher Marvel Comics. The team made its
debut in The Avengers # 1 (September 1963), the comic strip created by Stan Lee
and Jack Kirby.
Initially the Avengers
were composed of Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, Wasp, Henry Pym (aka Ant-Man and Giant
Man). Captain America joined in The Avengers # 4 (March 1964)
In 1963, the
publishing house Marvel Comics, with a unique but successful team of
superheroes (Fantastic 4, created in 1961), decides to compete with the Justice
League (1960) published by DC Comics that included the most popular characters
in the publishing, like Superman, wonder woman and Batman Universe DC5.
From the first issue,
dated September 1963, under the slogan "[...] to deal with the enemies
that no single hero could defeat" the group was characterized by frequent
and periodic changes of alignment. In very few numbers Captain America,
Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, Mercury, Black Panther, Vision, Black Widow and many
other characters they join the publisher.
The history of the
Avengers is complex. In the first numbers the presence of Bruce Banner / Hulk
is dysfunctional and almost anecdotal, not having returned to join the group
officially from that left him in the second issue of the collection; and even
joined the group after the first mission of this, Captain America is considered
today one of the founding members of the same, forming together with Thor and
Iron Man's iconic "Trinidad Avenger", the three main characters
equipment.
One of the
characteristics that differentiate the Avengers of any other group of
superheroes is that they are recognized for their heroism and responsibilities,
with the full support of almost all nations of the world and even at the time
by the UN being funded for who often perform rescue missions and operations.
Despite this, they are not a "group of the State (s)" government
response, and often have been faced with political interests (like during the
Lazos event of blood that linked the group with the X-Men in Genosha or the
Civil War event where Captain America would lead a splinter group opposing the
"Superhuman Registration Act", a clear allegory and criticism of the
post-11S policy of George W. Bush and the "Patriot Act" that enacted
during his administration). The truth is that it could be the group as a club
of modern adventurers (and, above all, friends), having been its first
headquarters majestic Stark Mansion, with its own rules and even membership
card, aware of their responsibilities to the world and the need to join forces
against threats that could not face alone.
Stan Lee failed to use
the characters in Fantastic 4 because they were already part of a group, and
served avoided Dr. Strange and Spider-Man because they are lonely people who
would not work within a group (Spider-Man would not be part the Avengers until
decades later, in 2005, and Doctor Strange would join the group in 2007) .
